Tyne Tunnel Escalator

(This project was featured both on local TV and in local Newspapers)

ENGINEERING work is under way to repair a Tyne Tunnel escalator, one of the longest in the country. The 200ft escalator, which has 306 steps, is one of four used by pedestrians to cross between South and North Tyneside. The structure at the Jarrow side of the tunnel, which travels upwards, broke down after a fault in a main drive bearing. The repairs, costing £20,000, are expected to continue until March. In the meantime pedestrians can use the lifts and walk through the tunnel while disabled people will be offered transport. Jeff Shaw, engineering manager said: “We have a team of four working on the repairs. Two are Tyne Tunnel staff and two are engineers from SDV Escalators Ltd. of Skipton, Yorkshire.

“It’s a very difficult job. The pedestrian and cycle tunnel opened in 1951 and it is Grade II listed. All of the designs for it were in place even before the Second World War. The electric motors have a 1936 stamp. “The machinery is heavy duty and some of it was probably designed under Victorian principles. Being of that age, there are no spare parts for the machines. So if you find a fault you have to repair it or get it manufactured.”

At its peak, around 20,000 pedestrians and cyclists a month used the tunnel. The figure at the moment is around 10,000 a month. Mr Shaw said although the machinery in the structure is old, it is still in good working order. He added: “The machinery has been well looked after and maintained over the years. “We expect the repairs will continue until March. We are being advised by experts (SDV Escalators Ltd) on the work. People can still access the tunnel.”
