BS EN 115 requires that mandatory action signs and prohibition signs for escalator users are fixed in the vicinity of entrances to escalators.
Whenever possible these safety notices should take the form of pictographs. The minimum dimension of each pictograph shall be 80mm x 80mm. As a minimum, these must state:-
• “Small children shall be held firmly”.
• “Dogs shall be carried”.
• “Use the handrail”.
• “Push chairs not permitted”.
When required by local conditions, prohibition signs, e.g. “Transportation of bulky & heavy loads not permitted” and mandatory action signs like “Use permitted only with footwear” will possibly be necessary. You should check with your local licensing authority.
Check that all safety signs are visible and have not been damaged, removed or defaced. If the safety notices are missing or damaged then they must be renewed immediately.
Escalator stop devices shall be coloured red and either on the device itself or in the immediate vicinity be marked with the inscription “STOP”.
SDV Escalators can provide you with Safety notices compliant to the British Standard. Bespoke notices, including signs to suit local conditions, can also be provided. Safety notices can be printed on different materials, dependent upon the type of surface (e.g. glass, aluminium) that they will be fixed to.
