As the owner or operator of an escalator you have a legal duty of care to ensure that your escalator is safe for passengers to use.
An escalator can cause injury if it is inadequately maintained, operated incorrectly or used improperly. You are also responsible for actively working toward achieving the safe behaviour of users.
In order to assess the operational safety of the escalator, you must check the condition of the escalator several times daily and before each start up. The escalator must be systematically checked to ensure that all components are undamaged, and working correctly. The approach to and exit from the escalator must not be obstructed.
Use a checklist to ensure that you have carried out all of the necessary inspections. It is recommended that you keep a record of the daily checks during the switching on procedure.
SDV Escalators offer safety training services to demonstrate how to complete pre-operational checks and how to ensure that the escalator continues to operate safely and correctly. We provide bespoke training documents to trainees at each site. Certificates of achievement are issued to all trainees on completion of the course.
